401E is a Promotional Program that is being run by a private company named "401(e)". They are an ENERGY STAR partner who is helping Grand Forks area homeowners make their homes more comfortable while achieving significant energy savings. The appear to be playing on the concept that like a 401(k) they are associated with a successful future. Regardless, although decreasing your spending, especially in the area of energy usage is important, it should be coupled with the full funding of all retirement vehicles, with any 401k up their match, then fully funding IRAs (ROTH if eligible) and finally fully funding the 401k.

Hi Paula,

I am not familiar with a 401E. Do you mean a 401(k)? If so, a 401(k) is a retirement savings plan that is sponsored by an employer. It allows you to save and invest for retirement before taxes are taken out of your paycheck. I would encourage you to talk with someone in human resources at your company to find out more about what is available to you through your employer. Your financial advisor can also help you understand your options.
