Where is my retirement money?

I received a letter from Social Security stating that I have funds through this retirement plan, reported in 2008 under plan number 36-6131610-001. When I called I was told there is nothing for me, but I have never withdrawn any monies. Please help me find my due retirement funds.

Hi Dean,

Sorry to hear this news. I know that it must be very concerning for you at this point. Your funds should be available, but you may have to do some research. If the retirement plan was transferred to a new vendor, for instance from Fidelity to Vanguard, there may have been some information lost during the change over. I would consider calling them directly and making sure that they are searching for your account based on your Social Security number. If that doesn't work then you should call your employer. As a fiduciary, they should have records about any transfer.

Hope this helps.
