How can i find out about my old 401k that i'm no longer working for the company?

You should have a statement from the investment company so you can call that company to get information on your account. If you don't have a statement then call the company you used to work for and talk to HR to get contact information for the 401k provider.

What if the company no longer exists and its actually been 20yrs? How do you locate it then?

Another option is to search with the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) which is a government agency. Go to the website www.pbgc.gov to get started with a search.
