Buy a house, or max out 401k?
Cyril,I think your questions has a short term and a long term answer. Short term it would be better to save and buy the house, long term with the power of compounding you would be better off saving for retirement. I think James is right sitting down with a hourly financial planner or CPA that ca...  (more)

Is it better to roll my old 401K $ into my new job's program or combine with my wife's for high $? Both are strong co's?
I would look at two factors when making this decision: How good are the investment options in the new 401k, and how involved do you want to be in managing this money? IF you enjoy managing your 401k and the investment lineup is good I would move the money into the 401k. If you do not enjoy managin...  (more)

Is it possible to borrow money from my 401K and pay it back monthly over time?
Robert,A 401k loan is what you are describing. Generally they will make you pay it back every pay period, not monthly. Your HR department will have a lot of information on a 401k loan so that is the best place to start. Generally the interest rate is around Prime and you normally get 5 years to ...  (more)

I just got a settlement of $200k from a auto accident. I'm only 52 going on 53. What or where should I invest my money?
Vicki, I am glad to hear you are okay and can enjoy your time on the sailboat. I work closely with PI attorney's and this questions always comes up when a client receives a large settlement. Any financial advisor that tells you they can give you a thousand a month is not telling you the whole trut...  (more)

I recently got married, is it a good idea for my wife and I to write wills now?
Congrats on your recent nuptials. Wills are important and I suggest finding a lawyer in your area that can help you with this. It is much easier and cheaper to do a will online , but you leave yourself open to someone contesting the will. A contested will is when someone who would have inherited as...  (more)

I would like to buy a home, can I get money out of my 401k for this and if so how do start?
Mike,You can withdraw up to 10,000 from a 401k or an IRA and not be subject to the 10% penalty for an early distribution if you are purchasing a home , however you would be subject to ordinary income tax on that withdrawal .You may want to consider taking out a loan from your 401k instead of withd...  (more)

I have 2 401Ks that I need to roll over-how can I get this done. I also want to increase my contribution. HELP?
How comfortable are you managing your old 401k money? If you enjoy managing your money and have the time to invest Scottrade or Ameritrade would be great options; low cost, great investment choices, and research is good. If you do not like to manage your money I would interview 3 financial advisor...  (more)

Safe Harbor 401k and Highly Compensated Employees?
Jim,Congrats on the new job.I would use this as a bargaining tool to try and get a raise that would make you a HCE. All joking aside unless you own 5% of the company you would not be a HCE at the $65,000 level. I would contact HR and find out why they gave you that application.Best of luck,Tim ...  (more)
