43 y.o. & 50000 in a 403b. OK to use for living expense during 3 yr PhD? Stafford Loan iffy. Will gross 60000/yr after.
Cheryl, I would concur with Andy's comment above. The Opportunity cost of using your "Retirement Savings" for anything else before retirement defeats their entire purpose, and that's why the gov't penalizes you for touching it. Obviously, if that's your last course of action, do it, but try to find ...  (more)

Which ONE of the 5 highest yielding DOW 30 stocks (currently) would you recommend and why?
While guys like the Mad Money guy and others would lead you to believe you can always chase returns and the "next big thing", there are so many ways to create a complete diversified portfolio that I would never recommend individual stocks. Unless you can sit in front of your computer all day and you...  (more)

Need to make a withdrawl?
Orlando, If you can provide a more detail in reference to what kind of withdrawal you are doing from what kind of account, either a Retirement or Non-Retirement Account, the better your question and needs can be answered. Please let me know if I can assist. Terrence...  (more)

My wife currently has two retirements plans with the same fund family: 401k & 403b. Can she roll the 403b into the 401k?
While she most likely can Roll the 403b into the 402k, I would ask why?! There are so many other options that may provide for better diversification and allocation outside of the 401k. More times than not, it is my belief that it is better to Roll it out to an outside IRA for those reasons. Now, if ...  (more)

How do i get a loan from my 401k?
Depending on whether or not your plan even provides for a Loan, you usually need to begin the process with your Human Resources department. They will be able to answer your questions more specifically! Good luck!...  (more)

How do I find out how much money is in my retirement account?
My question back to you would be why aren't you receiving statements via mail or email?! Your plan should be providing you with these as well as meetings at least annually to discuss the plan?! I would seek out your Human Resources department and ask for the contact information for both the provider...  (more)

Old 401k Plan?
First of all, did you contribute to the plan? If so, I too would recommend calling your former employer with all of your personal information and simply ask. If you had under $5000 in the plan, they could have disbursed it. Here in Illinois, if they can't find you, it is held at the State Treasurer...  (more)

I have 3 IRAs with 3 different firms, invested in 30+ stock funds. Would consolidation be a good move or will fees hurt?
Reed, While you may be benefiting from 3 different perspectives, and the possibility of diversification, I also believe that you would be better served with a thorough, concise plan moving forward based on your goals and needs. Stating specific funds or courses of action without knowing your persona...  (more)

I no longer work for lowes. How do I withdraw my 401k?
Mindy, while contacting your previous HR Dept. at Lowe's is one way, you should also have an "800" number on your Quarterly statement for direct access to your account/plan, or you may even have an Online Access set up. If you do have Online access, you may be able to handle all of this without bein...  (more)

I recently seperated from my job, lost my paperwork w/ intructions w/ my 401k. who do i contact to get this information?
Alice, You can get the information form your HR Dept at your previous employer. I would also advise that you take a moment to consider taking the money out as cash as you will realize about 60 cents on every Dollar you have in your account. Now you may need the money and I don't know your circumsta...  (more)

Given present market condition, is it advisable to change my current 401k plan selection of stable value to stock/bonds?
Curt makes a very point in asking how long do you have until retirement, but if you have time then I would do this in addition. I would say that you could slowly "Dollar-Cost Average" back in to the "market" in the other choices in your plan so that if the market does have a dip you will be getting ...  (more)

Safe Harbor 401k and Highly Compensated Employees?
Jim, one must remember that not everyone in the HR department is as knowledgeable as they should be. That being said, I too believe you received the wrong packet and if not, I'd love to know who the advisor and sponsor are of this plan as they don't know what they are doing. I'm in Roselle if you ne...  (more)

How do I withdrawal all of my Tyson 401k?
James, your best bet is to Rollover the 401k into an IRA Brokerage account(which occurs without penalty) and then determine the best way to invest and diversify your assets to best meet your needs, wants, and goals within the level of risk you are willing to take. If you have more specific questions...  (more)

I just found our that I have a retirement account with SPX. How do I go about checking it out and getting my money?
Unlike Curtis, I found Fidelity to be quite a pain to deal with as they never want to release funds and push VERY hard to get you to Rollover into one of their IRA's. The world is much bigger than Fidelity, and much better for the most part, so I would first talk with the HR Department to determine ...  (more)
