Is standard deviation of portfolio returns the best way to think of "risk" of a portfolio?
Standard Deviation assumes a normal distribution of historic returns. There are many examples in Finance where this is a poor or patently incorrect assumption. In fact, very few investments exhibit “normal” returns. A more practical problem is that Standard Deviation equal weights positive variat...  (more)

I would like to change the account for my pension direct deposit.?
The fastest way - and the correct way - to get this done is to contact the Pension Plan Sponsor, namely the HR Dept. at NYSED. I believe you should call (518) 474-5215, or you can e-mail: hr@mail.nysed.gov. They will have the form that you need....  (more)

How do i cash in a 401k that is more than 10 years old??? How do I go about doing that???
Consider "Rolling Over" your 401K. Are there benefits to investing in an ETF or mutual fund that invests in TIPS?
A TIPS is a US Treasury security with its principal linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) measure of inflation, thereby affording it partial inflation protection. Whether investing in a TIPS ETF or fund is beneficial will depend on the future courses of inflation and interest rates. While predi...  (more)

How many mortgage quotes should I get?
Consider using a Mortgage Broker. A Broker will generally have access to a long list of Mortgage lenders, insuring that you see a variety of rates and product offerings. A banker will only be able to show offerings from his / her banking institution....  (more)

If interest rates increase, should I consider a Zero-Coupon bond?
After 30 years in investing, I've recently concluded that predicting anything in Finance is fruitless. If you are concerned about rising interest rates (as I am), then Zero Coupon Bonds would be the wrong place to invest. I have placed a substantial amount of client money in Floating Rate Corporat...  (more)
